CfP: Men, Masculinities, and Reproduction (ZS NORMA – International Journal for Masculinity Studies); DL: 30.06.2019

NORMA – International Journal for Masculinity Studies; Guest editors: Rene Almeling, Yale University and Sebastian Mohr, Karlstad University (Web)

Proposals by: 30.06.2019

How can scholars conceptualize men, masculinities, and reproduction? How might research on reproduction contribute to the theoretical and empirical development of masculinity studies? What have trajectories for research on men, masculinities, and reproduction looked like in the past and what might they look like in the future? In this call for papers, on behalf of NORMA the guest editors Rene Almeling, Assoc. Prof. of Sociology, Yale University and Sebastian Mohr, Senior Lecturer in Gender Studies, Karlstad University, seek submissions on the topic of “Men, Masculinities, and Reproduction.”

The editors will interpret the theme broadly, and are thus open to submissions from a wide variety of disciplines, theoretical perspectives, regions, and methodologies (historical, qualitative, quantitative, demographic, etc.). In particular, they encourage submissions that theorize the relationship between reproduction and masculinities and/or examine the historical and social dimensions of cis and trans* reproductive bodies, lives, and experiences.

Rene Almeling and Sebastian Mohr understand the term reproduction to include a broad range of biological, bodily/material, and social processes, which might include (but are not limited to) such topics as reproductive health and capacities, conception, pregnancy, birth, contraception, abortion, infertility, and reproductive technologies (IVF, surrogacy, gamete donation, etc).

Interested authors should send an abstract (250 words) and a short author-bio (200 words) to rene.almeling@yale.edu and sebastian.mohr@kau.se by the 30th of June, 2019. Authors will receive notifications by the 7th of July. Full paper submissions according to NORMA’s guidelines (click here for more information) will be due by the 6th of October, 2019 for the journal’s double-blind peer-review process. Review responses can be expected at the beginning of December 2019. Depending on editorial decisions and revisions, final papers will be due by the beginning of March 2020.
